On this foggy, raw morning, seven of us set out for a hike around Woodpecker Pond. Our first surprise was a Broad-winged Hawk eating prey on a tree branch near the visitor's center, spotted by Christine W. before it flew right in front of us carrying the rest of its meal in its talons. A pair of AMCR's were seen copulating along the roadside. Later, as we were closing in on a distant singing Winter Wren, a Veery hopped on the path in front of us. My guess was that it was a new arrival and too exhausted to hop away from us until we got too close. The Blue-winged Warbler was heard as a distant call only once. A pair of Pine Warblers were seen together in suitable habitat.

A trip from Gate 9 was very quiet until we reached the bridge. At that point, a pair of Blue-grey Gnatcatchers were calling and one landed on a nest that was under construction. At least two Blue-headed Vireos were flitting in the same area, without vocalizing, and the ID was made with difficulty from a distance. A Black-and-white Warbler was finally seen at this site since visuals eluded us on the Woodpecker Pond site.

The Picture Pond area was unusually quiet except for the roar of the water. Across from Boundary Pond, a Northern Waterthrush was clearly heard, but a search of the ground and into the trees did not help us to find the individual. The other highlight was a Spotted Sandpiper foraging on an island in Boundary Pond, which required a scope to see well. None of us were carrying a camera, so this report won't contain any photos. That absence echoes the feeling of the difficulty we had seeing many of the birds given the lighting conditions.
