Seventeen birders set out around Woodpecker Pond at 6:30 in the hopes of seeing many newly arrived species and perhaps the Barred Owl that Sally found along the loop the day before, but the owl was nowhere to be seen. A Scarlet Tanager was heard well singing from the treetops, but not one person was able to locate the bird. We had several warblers along the loop though the Ovenbirds and Black-throated Green also escaped detection. After the gates to the park opened, we drove to the end, stopping to listen to and search for the Northern Waterthrush; it also eluded us. The Louisiana Waterthrush was singing at Picture Pond as we arrived there, but stopped shortly thereafter. In spite of all the visual misses, there were some great looks at the Broad-winged Hawk, the Solitary Sandpiper, Black-and white Warbler, and Blue-headed Vireo.
