Four participants seems to be the magic number for our discoveries
at Squantum.
Today we went straight to Squaw Rock Park, as that had been very
productive for birds just two days earlier. We were not disappointed! Although
the number of warbler species was not as numerous as had been at the weekend,
the looks afforded to us were spectacular. Near the quarry area one can look
DOWN on warblers, which is a great change from places like Mt. Auburn or
Wompatuck – no “warblers neck” for us today! Highlight for me was a lingering
Golden-crowned Kinglet. As there was no photographer among us, unfortunately we
have no pictures of birds or birders. Below is the complete lists for that

Then we continued on to Squantum Point Park and walked the whole
loop in brilliant sunshine without encountering a single dogwalker!
The last in the series of four
mornings at Squantum was higlighted by the arrival of the first of the year
willow flycatcher at Squantum Point Park. While looking at the bird through the
scope both Liam and I heard a virginia rail calling. I searched for it low on
the ground, hoping to catch a glimpse through the reeds when Liam exclaimed OMG and pointed to a bush. There, about
4.5 feet off the ground the rail was singing his little heart out! My theory is
that he had to compete with the planes landing overhead, but of course he just
might have liked the view or wanted us to be able to have a great look. It is
certainly not a look anyone of us will ever forget. Luckily Liam got his camera
out and had plenty of time to get a couple of lovely photos to remember this
wonderful sighting by.
